For those of us who aren’t Monica Gellar, cleaning the house can be a daunting and seemingly never-ending task that we avoid like the plague and only do when absolutely necessary. Cleaning on a regular basis and using techniques to simplify the process can make it a lot less painful. These are some tips that can make cleaning the house a lot easier and quicker:
1. Tote Tools and Supplies
House cleaning can be simplified by storing all your cleaning supplies and tools in one tote, caddy, or bucket. This eliminates the time you would take gathering up all your supplies and you can conveniently carry it from one room to another.
2. Simplify Supplies
If you want to fit all your supplies in one convenient tote or bucket, it’s helpful to simplify your supplies. Instead of having different cleaners for every surface of the house, use multi-purpose solutions to cut down on time and eliminate clutter in your tote. It will also save you money when shopping for cleaning supplies. These are the few products professional cleaners routinely carry and recommend for others:
-Light-duty evaporating cleaner
-Heavy-duty degreasing cleaner
-Powdered abrasive cleanser
3. Skip the Broom
Many people use a vacuum for carpeted floors and a broom for hardwood or tile floors. There is no need to switch between a vacuum and a broom as you switch floor surfaces. Use the vacuum on all surfaces. A vacuum is quicker and it is one less tool to carry around.
4. Get an Extension Cord
Invest in a 50’ extension cord for the vacuum cleaner. This allows you to vacuum more space in a quicker amount of time without having to pause to unplug and replug the vacuum as you move around.
5. Create a Cleaning System That Works For You
Establish some sort of cleaning pattern that works for you to take time off the routine. Work on one room at a time and pick a direction to work around that room. You can work from the front of the house to the back or whatever system makes the most sense to you. Eventually you will clean on autopilot and you won’t have to take extra time to backtrack to clean spaces you missed.
6. Eliminate Clutter
Regularly prevent clutter around the house to make it easier when you do a full house cleaning. Use cubbies, totes, or laundry baskets as catchalls for personal items for each member of the house; designate one catchall for each member. Make sure to empty the containers regularly and either trash, donate, or find permanent homes for each item. If you don’t have to deal with clutter, the cleaning will go by much quicker and be a lot easier.
7. Squeegee the Shower
Squeegee your shower walls and door after every use. This prevents soap scum, water stains, and mildew buildup. It will also save you time cleaning your shower during your bigger cleaning endeavors.
8. Focus on the Task at Hand
We are often tempted to watch TV or talk on the phone while we’re cleaning to keep us distracted and entertained. Stay off the phone, or better yet, hide it somewhere. Turn the TV off. Focus only on your cleaning. Multitasking while you’re cleaning actually adds time, so stay focused to make the process go as quickly as possible. If you’re focused you’re also less likely to miss something that you will just have to clean again later.
9. Use Both Hands
They have the saying “two hands are better than one” for a reason and it is certainly applicable to cleaning. Why only use one hand when you have two? Make use of both hands when cleaning to cut down on time. For example, spray the mirror with one hand and wipe it down with the other or scrub the counters using two sponges or cloths. You can use a micro-duster in one hand to get small spaces and a feather duster in the other for the larger spaces. There’s no reason to have one hand idle when it can speed up the cleaning process.
If there are multiple members of your household, use them to clean. Assign each person in the house a different task. For kids, it can be something as simple as putting toys away or making beds—each task is one less thing for you to do. If every person pitches in, even a little bit, and regularly does their assigned tasks it lessens the overall cleaning job and shaves time off it as well. Members of the household are also less likely to mess up and re-clutter the house if they have been a part of the cleaning process. There is no reason for you to do the whole cleaning job yourself.
